Your online reputation and how to manage it

The reputation of any business online is crucial because an online presence is so important that it simply cannot be ignored. A bad experience for a customer could severely damage your reputation in a matter of hours and this can be magnified if you are unaware of it happening.

So how can you improve the way in which you manage your online reputation? The tips below will help.

Understand what is being said about your brand

This is one of the first steps to take when it comes to managing your online reputation. There are a number of tools available that will monitor what is happening with your brand and what is being said and this can help you to keep your reputation above water. Google alerts is a good tool that will help you to see what others are posting about your brand.

Update, update and update again

Your business and brand has to remain relevant so that search results work in your favour. This will mean keeping your site updated along with any social media accounts. Social media is hugely important so have the right strategy and make sure that you keep things fresh.

If this is something that you find difficult, you could always hire someone to take control of it. Keeping on top of this and posting information that is relevant and interesting will ensure that you keep other sites and brands at the bottom of the pile.

Bad press? Take a breath

Whenever you receive bad press about your brand or business the immediate reaction is to defend when in reality it would make more sense to take a step back and assess things. You may need to give a generic response such as “we are dealing with this” but you do not want to turn it into something negative or even attack those who made the comments.

Before you decide to respond, gather as much information as possible and do it as quickly as you can so that you can respond as soon as you possibly can.

We all make mistakes, so admit it when it happens

Mistakes are part and parcel of being human but admitting to a mistake and doing all you can to rectify it is the first course of action. If you do this, you are likely to be given a second chance, giving you the ability to redeem yourself. Be open about the mistake, say you are sorry and explain how you are rectifying the issue. Do not deny it or behave stubbornly because this can make things a lot worse. Showing that you are open and honest will only help to build your online reputation.

Relationship building with your audience

Your audience is extremely important to you and so you have to continue to build a relationship with them. Managing your online reputation includes your audience believing in everything that you say and do. If you develop and create a brand that attracts the attention and adoration of people then you will be able to deal with many issues that may arise. If your audience feel a connected to your then it becomes easier to manage your reputation.
